  • Three warders remanded
    KITGUM-Three prison warders attached to Lotuturu Prisons Farm were on Friday remanded for three weeks for allegedly killing an inmate. Kitgum Court magistrate heard that Felix Okwanga from Oyam district, Richard Anywar from Kitgum district and Christopher Onen from Gulu district killed Justine Orach. They allegedly committed the offence in January. Sources said the warders first tortured the inmate with a huge stick after which they hanged him on a tree. Orach had been transferred to Lotuturu from Gulu Prison after he used a hoe to kill a fellow inmate with whom he had a misunderstanding.

    Lira farmers donate farm kit
    OTUKE-Lira District Farmers Association has commissioned a 200 metric-tonne warehouse, two rice mills with a capacity of 400kg per hour. The project is set to benefit over 1,600 farmers from the districts of Pader, Lira and Otuke. It will address lack of market access and encourage bulking and group marketing of rice in the area. The coordinator of the association, Mike Okwir, said Otuke, the leading rice producer in Lango, is set to earn sh450m annually from rice production. Okwir was on Friday speaking during the handover ceremony of the warehouse and rice mills to Otuke farmers at Adwari sub-county headquarters. He said the group had built other collection centres for rice farmers in Okwang and Orum sub-counties.

    Over 18 injured in car accidents
    GULU-Three people died and 18 injured in various road accidents were in January and February, the district traffic officer, Canicius Mugisha, said recently. He said 21 road accidents were recorded with the Police, with January having 14, resulting into the death of three and eight serious injuries. Mugisha said there were seven road accidents registered in February with no deaths, compared to February 2009 which registered four fatal accidents.
