PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has sent a condolence message to the family of the late Norah Anek Oting the mother of the Lords Resistance Army leader, Jospeh Kony.
Anek, 86, died of cardiac failure and lung disease in Mulago Hospital on Tuesday.
“It is with great shock that I learnt of the death of Maama Norah Anek which occurred on November 10 at 11:00 p.m, after a long illness,” Museveni said yesterday.
He said the Government looked after Mzee Luigi Obol and his wife Anek (Kony’s parents) since 1996. Anek was living in a home built by the Government in Mukono district.
She had been staying with her children Betty Akidi, Robert Olanya and some of her grandchildren.
“Due to unavoidable circumstances, I regret that I am unable to attend Norah’s burial. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” Museveni said.
Anek will be buried near the grave of Kony’s brother, Sikondo Mwaka, a former policeman.
The burial is expected to take place in Kony’s stepfather Martin Okidi Oluma’s home in Agweng-tina, Odek sub-county in Gulu district this weekend.
Kony’s father Obol was buried in Lacor cemetery in Gulu municipality in 2003.
Anek’s home where she produced her first born, Joseph Kony, on August 10, 1962 is about one kilometre from the roadside across Agweng-tina valley south of Odek Primary School.
Odek sub-county LC3 chairman Matthew Olobo said Anek would be buried at the brother of her husband’s place because it was accessible to mourners.
The Gulu resident district commissioner, Col. Walter Ochora, said he would hold a meeting with leaders of the Awere-Odek-Lalogi-Lakwana community to discuss burial arrangements.
