THE Government should provide for internally displaced persons (IDPs) who do not live in camps. A report released by the Refugee Law Project recently said the Government and donor policies were ignoring IDPs living with relatives or by themselves in shanties and towns.

The paper called for their involvement when offering assistance and resettlement packages.

The research, authored by Moses Okello, cites places in Kampala like Banda (Acholi quaters), Naguru Go-Down, Wabigalo, Namuwongo, Kibuli, and Kamwyoka as hosting the ‘urban IDPs’.

Mpumudde, Makenke, Masese, Walukuba and Kakira/Wandago were named in Jinja.

“Urban IDPs are entitled to the same rights and privileges as other IDPs and should not be denied assistance simply because they live in urban areas.”
