THE Police were yesterday morning deployed at the NRM party offices in Mukono town to control angry party members who wanted to demonstrate over the failure of the party to hold the primary elections.

The primaries, which had been scheduled for yesterday from Saturday, have again been postponed to today.

The group, led by George Ssentongo, had resolved to hold a peaceful demonstration to express their disappointment, but upon learning of their plan, the district Police commander, Aliphonse Musoni, and a group of armed Police officers stormed the offices.

Musoni told the group that he could not allow the demonstration to take place, saying it would be exploited by idlers and turn violent. They later called off the demonstration.

Ssentongo, who is one of the aspirants for the Mukono mayoral seat, complained that he had lost a lot of money due to the postponement of the primaries.

“I have been preparing food for my agents and giving them allowances since last Monday,” he lamented. “Some people just want to buy time and rig the elections.”

His supporters also said they were tired of for-going their work, only to find no activity.

The primaries in Mukono, Buvuma and Buikwe districts have been postponed to today. The Mukono NRM registrar, Isaac Musoke, said the voting materials for the three districts had been mixed up, resulting into the delay to disburse them.
