TALLYING of votes in Kanungu district has been suspended after it was discovered that 58 villages in Kinkiizi East did not vote in Monday’s NRM primary election due to lack of voting materials.

Another three villages in Kinkiizi West also missed the polls.
NRM district registrar Joseph Mwesigye Kamasha on Wednesday said arrangements were being made to ensure that voting takes place tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in the provisional results announced this afternoon for Kinkiizi East, Chris Baryomunsi was in the lead with 20,388 votes, while his rival, the Rev Kenneth Kanyankole, had 10,227 votes.

In the Women MP race, Elizabeth Karungi Baikirize got 26,458 votes, while Karungi Ruth Tukahirwa had 18073. The incumbent, Jacqueline Kyatuhaire, got 21,209 votes.

For the LC5 chairperson seat, Godfrey Karabenda got 27,725 votes and the incumbent, Canon Josephine Kasya, had 33,730 votes.

Mwesigye called for calm and patience until tomorrow when voting in the 58 cells will take place.

He said so far, the exercise in the district had been peaceful and no case of violence has been registered.

However, tension remains high among candidates, as each of them hopes to gain votes from the 58 polling centers to win the elections.
