President Yoweri Museveni has met representatives of Central Broadcasting Service (CBS), advertisers and fans, who apologised for the mistakes made that led to the closure of the station in September last year.
The meeting, that took place on Wednesday at State House, Entebbe, was a follow-up of an earlier meeting that Museveni held with the staff of the radio station last month, according to a State House statement.
The statement said during the meeting, the group re-appealed to the President for the re-opening of the station.
The group included H.B. Matovu, Tamale Konde, Sseguuya Kayibanda, Christine Nassozi, B. Katumba, Ismail Nsubuga, Ddungu Mwanamugimu, Abbey Mugisa, G.Tugume, Steven Ssebaggala and Gideon Ndugga.
“Museveni, in response, condemned the sectarian tendencies that were exhibited by CBS which led to its closure. He, however, promised to make further consultations with government officials on the matter,†the statement said.
The Buganda kingdom radio was closed during the riots that erupted after the Government stopped the Katikkiro of Buganda, Eng. John Baptist Walusimbi, from travelling to Kayunga to oversee preparations for the visit of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi.
The meeting was initiated by the Principal Private secretary to the President, Amelia Kyambadde.
Towards the end of last month, Kyambadde pledged to lobby for the re-opening of CBS.
However, the Buganda attorney general, Apollo Makubuya, yesterday dismissed the group, saying they are not the right people to represent the radio station.
“It is surprising that the President has shifted from talking to the leadership of CBS to talking to the fans,†Makubuya stated.
