THE Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura has ordered a medical examination of Igrid Turinawe injured in a scuffle on Thursday night when FDC supporters stormed Kabale Police Station.
Turinawe is a member of the FDC’s women’s league and was part of the group demanding the release of FDC party members that had been arrested from Kitanga in Kabale following chaotic district campaigns.
The south-western regional Police commander, Olivia Wawire, said her boss had ordered the investigations into Turinawe’s case.
“The press may have exaggerated the case but we shall establish what actually happened and will take appropriate decisions,†she said on Sunday.
A source said before Turinawe was beaten, she had appeared on a radio programme.
“She came to the station demanding to go to the Police cells. When they were denied entry, they began insulting the Police,†the source said.
He said Turinawe reportedly demanded the release of the FDC supporters. As the crowd at the station turned rowdy, the Police dispersed the crowd using teargas and shooting in the air.
The source said calm was restored after the arrival of the Kabale Police commander, Charles Sembabulidde.
Turinawe, who has since been admitted at Kabale Medicare Clinic, has had three stitches on the upper side of the back.
In an interview at the clinic, Turinawe said she was in great pain.
