Child survivors in the recent Bududa mudslide tragedy have received a donation of books, clothing and toys from a charity.
While receiving the donation, the Uganda Red Cross Secretary General, Michael Nataka, said 2531 of the survivors tragedy are below 18.
The aid was delivered by a workers’ delegation from Mara Group of Companies who also handed over sh5m and an assortment of household relief items.
Nigel Ball, the Mara Foundation director, said the donation was a contribution from their staff.
“We were moved by the tragedy and we implored staff to contribute items to help the victims,†he said.
Jagdish Thakkar, the group chairman, said the group will continue raising items and cash to help communities affected by landslides and floods in both the eastern and western region.
Mara Foundation is the charitable arm of Mara Group of Companies, owned by billionaire Anish Thakkar.
The group owns RAPS Uganda, an IT company, Kesington Real Estates and a US$13m factory in Mukono.
Over 5,000 people have been displaced, following the mudslide that hit Bududa recently.
According to the Uganda Red Cross, 2700 of them are registered to stay in Bulucheke camp. The rest have been asked to find host families in different parts of the region.
Nataka said the Red Cross had started tracingpeople to establish the number of the dead and help the displaced identify their relatives.
