THE Police in Kabale district have arrested six supporters of the FDC party, accusing them of trying to cause chaos in the ongoing byelection campaigns in Rukiga county.
The hotly-contested race is between NRM’s Adison Kakuru, FDC’s Jack Sabiiti, Medard Gumisiriza and Amos Mugisha, both independents.
The Police identified the suspects as Christopher Turyarugayo, Christopher Turyomunsi, Martin Byamugisha, Nazario Kaijuka, Martin Byomuhangi and Davis Kahamutima.
The suspects were picked from the home of Kabale mayor Dr Pius Ruhemurana.
At the time of the arrests yesterday, Ruhemurana was in Kabale town addressing a meeting with FDC party presidential aspirant Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu.
When news of the arrests filtered into the meeting hall, Ruhemurana and Muntu led over 100 party supporters to Kabale Police Station where they demanded to know the reason for the arrests.
Muntu and Ruhemurana held talks with the south- western regional Police commander, Olivia Wabwire, and the Kabale district Police commander, Charles Sembabulidde.
Wabwire told The New Vision that the Police had made the arrests following a tip-off that the youth were being recruited by FDC to act as escorts and would cause disruption during the voting period.
She added that the FDC supporters had travelled from Rukungiri and Bushenyi districts and were not residents of Rukiga county.
