PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni, who is also the chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has called on NRM supporters in Mbale municipality to reconcile and unite.

According to a statement from State House, the President on Tuesday visited Mbale to harmonise the affairs of NRM, especially to bring together supporters of the two party candidates, John Wambogo and Dr. James Shinyabulo Mutende.

Mutende stood as an independent in the recent Mbale municipality by-elections, won by FDC’s Jack Wamanga Wamai.

Addressing NRM leaders and supporters at Mbale Stadium, the President called on the party followers to put aside their differences and sectarian tendencies in the interest of the party.
He said the outcome of the recent byelection is a lesson and the mistakes should not be repeated. “What is more important is the party,” he stressed.

He also asked them to detach themselves from individuals and groups who do not appreciate the achievements registered by the NRM Government in the last 20 years.

He noted that the Movement had successfully implemented several programmes such as immunisation to eradicate polio and measles and universal primary and secondary education.

He called on the people to utilise government programmes like NAADS and SACCOs to fight household poverty. Museveni pledged to find a market for maize farmers who made a bumper harvest this season.

The President likened those who do not see the achievements, to waiters who keep breaking cups and plates in a hotel.

“Can you recommend such a person to work in a hotel? Don’t equate yourselves to those who have closed their eyes,” he told the gathering who included ministers, MPs, religious and local leaders.

Museveni further said the registration of voters will be computerised to avoid multiple registration and rigging.
He also promised to fix the roads in Mbale municipality.
