THE Police have granted boda-boda riders in the city a one-week grace period to get requisite requirements and comply with traffic regulations.

The decision was reached during a meeting between the Police and boda-boda leaders at Kyadondo House, Nakasero on Thursday.

It was chaired by Moses Byaruhanga from the President’s office.

The riders complained about high operation charges, the unprofessional manner in which they are arrested by the Police, and requested Byaruhanga to intervene.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said the grace period was reached after lengthy discussions and consultations.

She, however, said the Police will continue enforcing other traffic regulations during the period.

Nabakooba added that the Police and other stakeholders will intensify road safety education.

The riders demanded that the impounding of their cycles and imposition of unlawful charges and fines be stopped immediately.

But the Police said penalties such as tickets issued under the express penalty scheme are provided by the law and it was their duty to enforce them.

Byaruhanga promised to lobby Parliament to reduce the charges.
