A man on Thursday telephoned his father-in-law and apologised after killing his wife over a domestic misunderstanding.

Monday Mutebi, a barber and resident of Nabyewanga in Mpigi district, is on the run after beating his wife, Faridah Nabulya, to death during a fist-fight.

The Mpigi Police CID chief, Joshua Owor, said Mutebi beat his wife as he tried to stop her from leaving. He covered her body in their bed, locked the house and fled.

The neighbours said the couple’s elder two children were playing outside the house at the time of the incident.

They told the Police that they found the five-month-old baby suckling its mother’s body. “We suspected something was wrong when we heard the baby crying endlessly and the door was locked from outside,” said Lawrence Kalule, a neighbour.

The residents tried to hunt for Mutebi in vain.

Mutebi called his father-in-law, Hussein Jjagwe, informing him about the incident and apologised, saying he loved Nabulya so much that he did not want her to leave him. He, however, did not disclose his whereabouts.

Jjagwe told the Police that he protested his daughter’s decision to cohabit with Mutebi when she became pregnant at the age of 15 about 10 years ago.
