KYAMBOGO University has recalled thousands of students’ transcripts, after realising they had errors. A number of students, especially those who graduated in February, received transcripts with errors in scores and course units.
A transcript is a document that spells out a student’s academic history. It lists the titles and marks attained for the modules one studied in each academic year. It also gives a student’s period of registration, the date of award and classification of the degree.
The university spokesperson, James Bulenzibuto, confirmed that a number of transcripts printed this year had errors.
For instance, in art and industrial design, and social work and community development, there were several mistakes in course titles and scores captured.
last month, about 5,044 graduands were awarded masters and bachelors degrees, and diplomas. For the first time in the university’s history, the students received their transcripts on the graduation day.
However, this was at a cost to the university. It is recalling most of these transcripts for reprint and embossment to iron out the errors in computation and recording.
“We have recalled all the transcripts which had computation errors. The transcripts recall is not only for those who graduated last month, but even those from previous years,†Bulenzibuto said.
He attributed the mistakes to shortage of manpower in the academic registrar’s office, the manual computation of the results and management’s exerting so much pressure on the staff.
He assured students and all affected parties that the university would resolve the mistakes, and that such errors would not re-occur.
“We have attained software which will easily compute and arrange the data to avoid such errors in future,†Bulenzibuto explained.
Kyambogo is a public university in Uganda. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 2003, after a merger of the three public institutions on Kyambogo Hill.
