THE Electoral Commission chairman, Eng. Badru Kiggundu, has dismissed allegations that he subscribes to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

“I have never held a card of the NRM, never belonged to the NRM and have never held a card of any party in the world,” Kiggundu said.

“When I stood for elective position in 1996, the country was under NRM,” he told participants at a public dialogue on the electoral process held at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Tuesday.

He also defended the commission, which he heads. “We remain independent in our decision and we stand by it,” he said.

Opposition leaders have called for the disbanding of the Electoral Commission, saying it is not independent.
They also accuse Kiggundu of being an NRM sympathiser.

Kiggundu stated that the electoral process is a collective effort of all stakeholders, including citizens.

Justice George Kanyeihamba, a former Supreme Court judge, called for an end to the buying of votes.
