THE Police and officials from the National Drug Authority (NDA) in Iganga have impounded over 10 sacks of counterfeit drugs smuggled from Kenya.

The counterfeits, packed in gunny bags and boxes, were seized from a boutique in Iganga town on Sunday.

Jennipher Aujo, the inspector of drugs in the south eastern region, yesterday told The New Vision that the team got a tip-off from a town resident.

“These drugs were smuggled through the eastern border and other inlets at the Lake Victoria shores in Mayuge district,” Aujo said.

“Our surveillance networks had earlier reported that the dealers use the boutique as a coverup .”

She said the counterfeits included chloroquine phosphate injection, fansidar, quinine phosphate injection, septrine, quinine tablets, diazepam, erythromycin tablets and grip water.

She added that some of the drugs were banned in Uganda.
The suspects fled the boutique upon seeing the Police, she said.

“We are working with NDA and the health services monitoring unit to arrest the culprits,” said Sam Lubega, the south-eastern region Police spokesperson.

He said upon arrest, the culprits will be charged with possession of classified and unregistered drugs.
