Soldiers in Kasese marching from the Congo border as part of the Army Week

By John Thawite

THE army has dismissed reports of rebel infiltration in western Uganda.
“You are in safe hands. There is no rebel on our Ugandan side of the Rwenzori,” the 305th brigade commander, Lt. Col. David Benjamin Kabangira, said on Saturday.

Kabangira was addressing a gathering that had braved a heavy downpour to attend the 29th Tarehe Sita anniversary.
His assurance comes amid reports that the remnants of the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) had sneaked into western Uganda through Bundibugyo district.

He said some ADF rebel remnants were in the DR Congo, including long-serving rebel leader, Fenehasi Kisokeranio. Kabangira asked their Ugandan relatives to woo them back home.

Kabangira disclosed that there were illegal guns in the area and urged the residents to report any suspicious characters.

He warned those threatening fresh war against the country, saying they would not survive the might of the UPDF if they dared.

Kasese resident district commissioner Capt. James Mwesigye paid tribute to the hundreds of Ugandans who shed their blood for the liberation of the country. However, he decried the high level of poverty and corruption in Uganda.
