THE Police are holding a couple for allegedly killing their one-year-old baby during a domestic fight. The Police said Anifa Namayanja, 27, used the baby as a shield during a fist fight with her husband, Sam Buyinza, 36.

The Kampala Metropolitan deputy Police spokesperson, Henry Kalulu, yesterday told a media briefing that Buyinza punched Kisaakye Byakatonda last week during a domestic brawl with his wife at their home in Kisigula zone in Mutundwe, Kampala suburb.

The Police said on realising that the baby was severely injured, Buyinza rushed him to a nearby clinic only to be told that he was dead.

It is reported that Namayanja had by this time fled the home. Kalulu said the couple would be charged with murder.

Buyinza, a boda-boda rider, reported the matter to Nalumunye Police post and was detained. Namayanja was also arrested and the couple has been transferred to Kajjansi Police Station.

The baby’s body was taken to Mulago Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The couple, who have six children, were yesterday paraded before journalists.

Buyinza declared that he wanted to “get saved and be born-again”, saying he fought with his wife because he often drank.

“I returned home the previous day and the children told me she had gone drinking. She returned home drunk and the next day, she sneaked away when I had gone to the trading centre. I also decided to go and drink some waragi,” Buyinza said.

He added that he bought three sachets of Vodka from the nearby shops before the fight. He, however, said he did not intend to box his child.

“I’m sorry for what happened but I want to get saved and stop drinking because it has led me to this,” Buyinza remarked.

Namayanja admitted that although she had drunk the previous day, she had not drunk on the fateful day Buyinza pounced on her.

She showed journalists scars on her neck and hands, saying her husband tried to strangle and twist her neck.
Namayanja also denied killing the baby.

“On my return from the bedroom, he (Buyinza) pounced on me although he saw me holding the baby and it fell. I saw my baby dying and run out to call the neighbours for help,” she said.
