Somali guests stay in slum
BUGANDA - Delegates from Somalia attending the Parliamentary meeting of Islamic states have declined accommodation at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort and opted for Kisenyi. Organisers clarified that the delegates were not forced to reside in the Kisenyi because of financial constraints as earlier speculated, but for security reasons. Kisenyi is a host residency of nuemrous Somalis in Uganda.
DP pleads over youth jobs
BUGANDA - Democratic Party members have asked the Government to address the high unemployment rate among the youth, saying it is a time- bomb. Addressing party members on Tuesday, the publicity secretary, Fred Mwesigwa, said the unemployment rate was worrying.
Meeting on families held
BUGANDA - A four-day conference to strengthen families and marriages has opened in Kampala. The conference attended by hundreds from Burundi, Tanzania and the US, started on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference, senior pastor Frank Butayi said the meeting had been organised because many families in Uganda were facing crises.
Ministry tables gender Bill
KAMPALA - The Ministry of Gender has tabled a Bill before Parliament that will no longer make it compulsory for every woman resident in a village to be a member of its women council. The National Women’s Council Amendment Bill 2008 will also make the decisions made by the village women council binding on all women in that village. The Bill seeks to empower the Electoral Commission to designate a period for registering citizens who would like to participate in a women’s council election.
UPDF soldier dismissed
MOROTO - The UPDF court martial has sentenced another soldier to nine years in prison and dismissed him from the army with disgrace. Prosecution, led by Capt. Greens Nuwagaba, on Friday told court that Cpl. Kemishi Ozoo from the army headquarters in Bombo, was in November 2009 found in possession of 324 live bullets than is normally issued to soldiers. He said the bullets were meant to be issued to three soldiers. Two weeks ago, court sentenced Pte. Abraham Angela to nine years imprisonment and dismissed him with disgrace for lending out his gun to a civilian.
