MAKERERE University academic staff has not yet taken a position on whether Prof. Mondo Kagonyera should resign as the chancellor.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairperson of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association, yesterday said the matter would be discussed in the second semester that starts soon.

Odoi was responding to a decision taken by the university convocation, which asked Kagonyera to resign over his involvement in the National Social Security Fund scandal, where he was the deputy managing director. “My opinion is that Prof. Kagonyera should come out and make his position clear. You cannot be clean here and dirty there.”

Vice-chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba yesterday said the powers to compel Kagonyera to resign lay with the university council. He explained that it is the council that made the recommendation for Kagonyera’s appointment.
