THE Democratic Party (DP) has called off its delegates conference that had been slated for this Friday.
In a statement signed by party president John Ssebaana Kizito, chairperson Joseph Mukiibi, vice- president Joseph Balikuddembe, legal adviser Erias Lukwago and organising secretary Deo Njoki, party leaders said their electoral committee had no mandate to hold the conference this week.
“NEC has received a lot of complaints on the way the exercise was carried out in different parts of the country. Leaders at all levels and members of DP are hereby directed to put off this exercise until they receive instructions from NEC. The party is drawing guidelines and is also streamlining the issue of membership cards,” the statement clarified.
The party’s electoral committee last week defied the leaders when it convened a press conference vowing to continue holding grassroots elections.
The leaders also resolved that no other person will be allowed to speak on behalf of DP without authorisation from the party president or the NEC.
They threatened to take disciplinary action against any party official who will defy its directives.
“Any leader or member of DP who will engage in a conference called in the name or on behalf of DP when such a conference has not been authorised or convened by the party leadership will face sanctions, which may include suspension or expulsion from the party,” they warned.
Kampala mayor Nasser Sebaggala last week dragged Ssebaana, Mukiibi, and the acting secretary general, Dr. Lulume Bayiga, to court for delaying the delegates conference.
