THREE senior Police officers and a special Police constable are being tried for shooting two students of Bugema SDA Secondary School in Luweero district. Last week, the suspects appeared before a five-member Police disciplinary committee at the Police Training School at Kibuli in Kampala.
They are district Police commander Eddie Kulany, community liaison officer Ibrahim Odroa, criminal investigation department chief Suleiman Kabuye and an unidentified constable.
Four other Police officers have already appeared before the Luweero court over charges of causing grievous body harm.
The policemen are said to have shot at rioting students, injuring Wilber Omara and Miriam Adyelo, both of Senior Six. The two are still admitted at Mulago Hospital.
Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said Kulany and Kabuye would be disciplined over neglect of duty, adding that Kulany faced an extra charge of being away from office without official leave.
“Odroa and the constable will answer charges of discreditable conduct,†she said.
Appearing before the team, led by the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Francis Bbule, the officers denied the allegations.
The suspects, Nabakooba said, secured bail after each produced two sureties. They had been detained at Nsambya Police barracks.
Prosecution was asked to secure witnesses to testify against the accused next week in connection with the July 26 incident.
Initial reports indicate that the strike begun as students protested the increased fine for losing meal cards from sh500 to sh2,000.
The students were also unhappy about the sh5,000 fee for treatment in the school clinic.
It was also alleged that the school administration locked out students who had not fully paid tuition fees.
The school was closed indefinitely after the strike.
