THE six-day strike by drivers of Swift Truckers and Maersk Company ended on Saturday after the protestors got their salary arrears worth over Ksh14m (Ush330m).
Over 200 drivers had parked their vehicles at Malaba in Kenya in protest, posing danger to Ugandan traders moving perishable goods.
A driver, Stanley Kemboi, sounded relieved as he left Malaba early Saturday with 23 tonnes of fresh fish that was on the verge of rotting after the truck freezer broke down on Friday.
The fish worth Ksh8m (Ush200m) was destined for Mombasa. The fish was saved by mechanics from Kampala who rushed to Malaba to repair the freezer.
The drivers had demanded Ksh0.3m each being salary arrears owed since last year. They also wanted to be paid monthly and not on casual basis.
They also demanded appointment letters, indentification cards and annual leave.
