A total 513,993 people displaced by the LRA in Acholi, Lango and Teso, have been resettled in the villages of their origin, the Uganda humanitarian situation report has indicated. An estimated 771,618 are still in the camps.

The report stated that the camp population in Acholi was 1,111,987 by 2006. An estimated 659,459 are still there, 407,155 are in transit sites and 44,749 are already in their villages.

In Lango, 466,103 were in the camps by end of 2005, while 463,944 have returned leaving 2,159 in the camps. The report stated that the children, elderly and “other extremely vulnerable people” are left in camps to access basic services as the household heads return to build new huts and tend gardens. However, the abandoned huts are a concern for the nearby communities who suspect them of being used for criminal activities.

The report also raised concern that landmines and other explosives still pose a threat.

However, the report said support is needed for schools returning to their old locations. It said compounds need to be cleared; classroom blocks, desks, latrines, water points, scholastic materials and teachers’ houses are needed. It also raised concern over the high rates of school drop outs.
