Police block DP rally

THE Police have warned the Democratic Party (DP) against holding a rally in Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb, this weekend.

The Police spokesman, Gabriel Tibayungwa, yesterday said: “We have heard announcements on FM radio stations urging people to turn up in big numbers at Kamwokya. They say they will be there even without our permission. If people go there, we will enforce the law.”

Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago, a DP member, yesterday told The New Vision that they would hold “parallel celebrations” to that of the NRM slated for Kololo Airstrip.

According to Lukwago, their president, Ssebaana Kizito, notified the Kira Road Police Station chief, Alex Asiimwe, about the event. Asiimwe allegedly sent the January 22 letter to the Kampala Extra Police chief, Edward Ochom, yesterday.

But Tibayungwa said DP should have sought permission to hold the rally at least seven days in advance as stipulated in the Police Act.

Asked what they would do if the Police blocked them, Lukwago said: “We are ready for the beatings.”
