THE House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has elected the Reverend Canon Dr. George Tibesigwa as the new bishop for Ankole diocese.
In a meeting held at Lweza training centre in Kampala on Thursday, the bishops also elected the Reverend Cranimer Mugisha bishop for Muhabura diocese.
Tibesigwa has been the Principal of Bishop Burham University College in Kabale and becomes the fourth bishop of Ankole diocese, replacing retired bishop Elisha Kyamugambi.
The election of Tibesigwa follows the rejection of two brothers, the Rev Dr. Wilberforce Kamukama and the Rev Dr. Grace Karamura, who had been nominated to replace Kyamugambi.
Archbishop Luke Orombi intervened and appointed retired bishop William Magambo as caretaker for the diocese until another bishop was named.
Mugisha, who has been the Dean of St. Andrew’s Seseme Cathedral, becomes the 2nd bishop of Muhabura and replaces retired bishop Ernest Shalita. Muhabura diocese was hit by a row after Christians rejected the bishop elect, Rev. Canon David Sebuhinja.
Sebuhinja has since been ordained bishop in Mbale, and given another ministry in the Church outside his mother diocese, Muhabura.
The Provincial secretary, the Rev. Canon Aaron Mwesigye, said on phone: “This was a successful selection by the House of Bishops.
There was no problem at all.” He said Tibesigwa would be consecrated on September 2 at St James Cathedral in Ruharo in Mbarara, while Mugisha would be consecrated on August 26 at St. Andrews Seseme Cathedral.
