The POLICE have arrested two men accused of conning the public. One of them, Hakim Asiimwe, pretended to be the new Ugandan envoy to Somalia.

The other suspect, Enock Wenka is accused of luring people into bogus jobs for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

The deputy director of CID, Okoth Ochola, yesterday paraded the two suspects at a press conference. He urged people who had fallen victim to their practices to lodge complaints at the CID headquarters.

“We received a lot of allegations about Asiimwe to the effect that he has been holding out for long as a State House official,” Ochola said.

Moreover, he said, Asiimwe had travelled to Somalia and introduced himself there as the new envoy appointed by President Yoweri Museveni.

“We have investigated and established that he was there and that he was received with all the pomp, pageantry and glory. This is treasonable,” Ochola said. Asiimwe is charged with impersonation.

During a house search, the Police found army fatigues, a walkie talkie, fake pounds, a laptop, a tape recorder and two pistol holders.

Asiimwe laughed off the allegations. He instead blamed Presidential Secretary Amelia Kyambadde for his arrest, claiming she was trying to stop his attempts to drag her to court over an alleged acid attack plot. It took a stern warning from the Police to silence him.

Wenka was accused of having conned people by printing and selling fake CHOGM identity cards.
“He would assure his suspects that he has got them jobs as customer service personnel for CHOGM and sell them the identity cards at sh150,000 each,” Ochola said.
