  • Waragi kills one in Wakiso
    WAKISO
One more person has died in Ggangu village after taking poisonous waragi. Peter Gutawo reportedly died after taking the same waragi that killed his colleagues last week. According to Dan Nsubuga, an information officer in Ggangu, Gutawo was found with sachets of Extra Gin and Good waragi, which the Uganda National Bureau of Standards declared sub-standard. When The New Vision visited Ggangu on March 1, Gutawo opposed reports that waragi had killed over 40 people, including nine villagemates. He argued that health problems coupled with witchcraft were responsible for his colleagues’ death. So far, 46 people have died after drinking intoxicated waragi.

    Police arrest four in Masaka
    MASAKA
The Police have arrested four suspected robbers including a UPDF soldier. The regional Police commander, Fred Ssekiwere, said they also recovered a gun from the suspects. The suspects were identified as Pte Vincent Ssemukasa, an army deserter, Fred Kakeeto, Desire twinomujuni and Yasin Ddungu. Ssekiwere added that the same group staged a roadblock at Kyawagoonya and robbed several people at gun point last week. He appealed to local council officials to be cautious about strangers.

    Correction
In our story: “Top schools to dominate universities” published on yesterday, it was reported that out of the 82 students who sat for A’level in 2006 at St. Henry College, Kitovu, only 10 have at least 14 points. The correct number of students with at least 14 points is 66. We regret any inconvenience caused by the error.
