Uganda Peoples congress (UPC) presidential candidate Miria Kalule Obote has vowed to scrap State House scholarships but leave the Ministry of Education to ensure that such funds reach deserving beneficiaries.
She promised to initiate a loan scheme for needy students in higher institutions of learning, repayable in 10 years of their gainful employment.
Miria was addressing a rally at Masindi Stadium, after making stopovers in Karuma, Bweyale, Kigumba, Kijura and Kiryanga on her way from Adjumani yesterday.
“UPE was ill-conceived and university education is now for the rich but UPC will reverse all that,†Miria said.
She decried the poor state of the 22 hospitals the late Apollo Milton Obote constructed, promising to rehabilitate and adequately equip them.
Earlier she laid wreaths on the graves of prominent party officials John Kasigwa, Ausi Rwakaikara and Asumani Karungi.
She was due to address another rally in Biiso, Buliisa county, before proceeding to Hoima.
