Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) presidential candidate Miria Kalule Obote was yesterday due to resume her campaign trail in northern Uganda after a day’s rest in Kampala.

Sources at Uganda House, the party headquarters, said Miria called off her tour of Karamoja due to fatigue and illness.

Dr. Henry Opiote, who is Miria’s personal physician, said, “We came back to Kampala on Wednesday evening. The rest was good for everybody because we needed it.”

The party’s information officer, Yoga Adhola, said Miria’s Police escorts had not received their allowances yet, so they had to return to Kampala to chase up the payments.

“Now they have got their money and are in position to travel more comfortably,” Adhola said.

Under the restructured programme, Miria was to address a rally in Otuke county in Lira district yesterday morning and another in Lira municipality in the afternoon.

UPC will hold rallies in Dokolo and Aber sub-counties in Apac today before proceeding to Kitgum and Pader tomorrow and Gulu on Monday. Miria will on Tuesday cross into West Nile.

Miria was in Moroto district on Wednesday, but she skipped other parts of Karamoja. She instead sent party treasurer Badru Wegulo and campaign strategies official Chris Opio to cover Kaabong and nakapiripirit districts.

Officials dismissed allegations that Miria’s trail had been disrupted by the breakdown of her public address system.

They said the amplifiers that blew while she was in Pallisa were promptly replaced and the incident had not affected her performance at all.
