DEMOCRATIC Party (DP) presidential candidate Ssebana Kizito has said he would like to help his former teacher, Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki, to strengthen the East African Community.

“Mwai Kibaki was my teacher in Makerere in 1959. Thereafter, we went to the East African Legislative Council together. So I now want to help him strengthen the new East African Community,” Ssebana said yesterday.

He was speaking to three visiting bishops from the Anglican Church of Kenya, after a New Year service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe. The bishops, who are in Uganda with their families for a retreat, are Stephen Mwangi (Nakuru Diocese), Charles Gaikiya (Nyahururu) and Stephen Kewagisi. Archbishop Luke Orombi presided over the service, assisted by Bishop Balaggadde Ssekadde.

The 10:00am service also doubled as a thanksgiving event for city councillor Florence Nkalubo and her spouse, Ronnie, who were almost crippled in a motor accident last year and have had successful medical attention abroad.

Hassib Kabuye Takuba, the acting mayor and a mayoral candidate, was present. Takuba’s political rival, John Ssenseko Kulubya and Lubaga Division chairman Justine Ssendikadiwa attended.
