The son of Vice-President, Gilbert Bukenya, died at Mulago Hospital after being involved in a road accident on Saturday morning.
Bryan Bukenya, 26, a lawyer who was about to complete a cadet officers course at Kabamba military school, sustained serious injuries in the accident on the Mityana-Kampala road and died yesterday morning, according to the Police.
Relatives, however, put the time of his death at 10:00pm on Saturday.
Bukenya junior, who leaves behind a three-month-old baby, was among six people traveling from Kabamba to Kampala in a double-cabin pick-up at 5:00am on Saturday when the driver reportedly lost control and the truck overturned at Bira trading centre, about 13km from Kampala.
Kampala regional traffic boss James Wakholi yesterday identified the other occupants as Pte. Ronald Mukalazi, Warrant Officer Charles Balidawa, Emmanuel Musanza and Dennis Oketwong. They were all admitted at Mulago.
“Mukalazi is still admitted but the rest were treated and have been discharged,” Wakholi said yesterday.
The driver, Nathan Lwanga, is said to have vanished after the accident and had not been traced by yesterday.
The Police said the cause of the accident had not yet been established. However, residents said the vehicle was speeding. The driver is said to have lost control in a corner, causing the car to roll over several times. The wreckage was towed to the inspector of vehicles in Naguru, Kampala.
Burial arrangements were going on at the Vice-President’s country home in Kakiri, Wakiso district. When The New Vision reached the home, Bukenya was supervising the clearing of the burial ground. But he had to be taken back to the house after his pressure shot up.
A funeral service will be held at midday today at Rubaga Cathedral, according to a statement issued by the Vice-President’s office. Details of the burial will be released later.
Born on January 2, 1983, Bryan Bukenya studied at St. Savio Junior Primary School, Kisubi before joining St. Mary’s College Kisubi for his O’level.
He later went to Kings College Budo for A’level and then proceeded to Coventry University in the UK where he pursued a degree in law.
After his return, he did his clerkship at the Court Martial and later enrolled for the cadet course.
