TROUBLED National Forestry Authority boss Damian Akankwasa was yesterday questioned over the sh900m cash that was allegedly stolen from his home in Naguru.
Casually dressed, he arrived at Kampala Central Police Station shortly after 3:00pm and proceeded to the office of one of the detectives where he recorded a statement.
He left the Police station unaccompanied about three hours later. The Police, it emerged, had summoned him earlier this week to extract more information from him regarding the source of the money.
It is the second statement he has recorded in connection with the incident. The first was recorded at Kira Road Police Station in August when the colossal amount was stolen.
After The New Vision broke the story, President Yoweri Museveni ordered that Akankwasa be sent on leave and directed CID and the IGG to probe the source of the money.
“Investigations into this matter continue,” a Police detective told reporters yesterday. Asked whether they had made headway in finding the money, he said there was “no direct clue” yet.
Akankwasa has accused his wife, Juliet Katusiime, of stealing the money. She was charged with theft on October 19. She has denied the charge and attributed the claim to a domestic wrangle.
In a statement last month, Akankwasa claimed that the money belonged to him and his brothers, John Bagambe and George Akankwasa, and that it was for the purchase of a plot of land.
However, questioned by the Police on Friday, the two brothers reportedly confessed that they did not know where the plot was or who was selling it.
They also allegedly could not provide any documentation to prove their claim that the money was collected from friends and relatives.
Akankwasa at first argued that the owner had left on an urgent business trip on the day they were supposed to finalise the deal and pay him.
However, he later said they were still looking for an additional sh100m.
