TWENTY-FIVE Police officers, among them three divisional commanders, have been arrested and detained over the last week in connection with various incidents, including the eviction of tenants in Nateete and the weekend shooting at a school in Luwero.

Seven were arrested in two separate incidents in connection with the eviction of a family and the demolition of houses in Nateete and Mengo Kisenyi, both Kampala suburbs.

The other 18 were arrested on Monday in connection with the Bugema SDA Secondary School riot, in which two students were shot and injured.

Nateete Police chief Robert Semata and Constable Swaley Moses were arrested on the orders of President Yoweri Museveni who visited the area.

The area CID boss, John Bosco Ozera, was later arrested on the orders of Police boss Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura after he learned that 12 other officers suspected of having taken part in the evictions had disappeared.

Two of those on the run have been arrested in connection with the incident, bringing the total to five.
“The two were part of the 12 on the run and were arrested on Monday,” spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said yesterday. All five are held at Nsambya Police barracks.

In addition, Augustine Kasangaki, the DPC Old Kampala Police Station, and Ronald Magezi, an officer in the legal unit, were arrested on Monday over the Bugema incident.

“Some of those from Bugema are in Nsambya, while others are at the Kampala Central Police Station,” the Police said.

The Police was yesterday scheduled to forward the two cases to the resident state attorney for perusal. “He will then advise as to whether they should be charged in the criminal courts or before the Police disciplinary court,” Nabakooba said.

The Bugema shooting followed a strike by the students on Monday. They boycotted classes after six students, including the head prefect, were arrested for shattering window-panes.

The school administration called in the Police who used live bullets in an attempt to quell the rioting students, injuring Wilber Kwamboka Omara and Miriam Adyelo, both of Senior Six.

The Police immediately set up an inquiry to establish who issued the instructions to fire.
