| Surely everything cannot be put on government or being politicised. This government have done it out most within its mean. They air lifted students to start schools do you how much it cost? When I see people singing all day AU AU we are panafricanist where are they with the help? The have enough choppers and vehicle to assist a brother in need isn'it? but they come and build mosque and churches! because we are talking about cost and putting verything on politician why don't we talk about insurance? werethey insured? Do the local government prepared to deal with such disaster?do the people have enough money to restart again? I remember when there was a flood in MOzamique only South Africa assisted them with their helocopters and that was after USA came in. But Ugandan government have tried at least recognise that and then build on it with more expertise. Talking and politicising everything will never help but create more animosity. And we should try to learn to give credit where it is due |

| ARE THE FLOODS STILL THERE TO THHIS DAY? AND if so, are people still behaving the same way? The lady just talked about the usual problems of northerners. JUSt arrest all city officials of those regions and send them to jail cuz those areas have two big problems....CORRUPTION AND IGNORANCE. SURELY IT AINT THE FLOODS! |
| Flooding in Kumi, Ngora, Agu, Kobwin and surrounding areas. authored by ElizabethSwarbrick on 10. October 2007 at 22:09 |
| There is much being said and done for the people affected by the floods in Soroti, Katakwi, Amuria, Awoja etc and other areas outside Teso, but I am not hearing much about the people in the Kumi, Ngora, Agu, Kobwin areas. People here are also suffering a great deal and seem to be neglected as far as food and emergency supplies are concerned. The area is becoming increasingly isolated, travelling impossible and access to food extemely difficult. People are both disheartened and afraid. I realise that the Government is working hard in this crisis but please don't forget these people who are struggling so hard. If there is aid available please let them have some of it. |
| Prevention as well as Mitigation authored by Opira Robert on 9. October 2007 at 13:14 |
With natural disaster, it is a very difficult things to handle. This does not mean something can not be done. The setting up of the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness was a wise idea. The problem is this instead became Ministry of Disaster Unpreparedness right from the go. We do not know how prepared the ministry is in terms of its budget and personnel. As i watched SBS TV in Brisbane in Australia, more than two friends were calling me to express sympathy and shortly i saw Minister Ecweru appearing on the screen and what he said was disappointing. I mean, he was begging for international community like an hungry street kid begging for food on a Kampala street.
I do understand we do not have enough resources to address such disaster but as a government minister one neds to stree what the gov't has done (if at all it did) and only ask for help because gov't has exhausted its resources already but not like the gov't completely has nothing or can do nothing.
I appreciate the initiative of the president to walk for fund raising. Keep it up. However, i have problem with M7 empty promises. The building the Aswa bridge in Gulu/Pader was one of the 2006 pre-election promise and whay was it not done untill disaster? Why should we wait for World Bank t come and do it? Can't Uganda make it? I think the government needs to perform so that the outside world will only come in where we can not afford.
Uganda needs to integrate disaster prevention into its long term development plan and we need to openly see the Ministry of Disaster Unpreparedness functional with competent people but not politicains who are jsut there to politicize releif work |

| If the community cannot come together or accomplish anything for themeselves then there is a big problem. This is not a rocket science like mentioned by others. You unite and work together or you die like! Thsi remind me the story in New orleans (USA) ; unless you realise who you are where you live and how to survive and expect that you will have the fire brigade to come a solve the problem for you then you are in trouble. this vicious circle circle that when there is drought you starve and when there is rain you drown will never end and you will always hope that the Gov will and beg for food aid; work together and survive; at local level wake and start creating flood protection defense and drain the water in flood plain or some sort of compensation area then go to the government for the expertise |
| a tip to remember authored by bernard on 2. October 2007 at 21:11 |
ok have a tip for you to see... Many times when given to the community it ends up nothing being done. Have you ever experienced such a thing? If not, the journey is still long you'll come across it one day.
If yes, then the question is why is it so that nothing ends up being accomplished?
So someone suitable must get onto the steering organize the community and get the damn thing completed.
Dont you think so? |
| Floods in Uganda authored by sylvestre niyibizi on 2. October 2007 at 19:59 |
| I thing the question is wrong in its premises! The question should be what Ugandan will should do about floods in Uganda. The government makes policies and assist within the means available as usual but people should come together as a community and tackle such catastrophy |
| Agree with wabomba and Mayende authored by ballgirl on 2. October 2007 at 19:01 |
My brothers it was just a little misunderstanding.... but I agree with you 100%. Its important if we all see the point/ the problem/the challenge -crystal clear. Now we are altogether in this. There is nothing like when it comes to the concerns of life or death. wish all ugs could have that same perspective of considering first things first, uganda/world -would be the most beautiful and peaceful place to live in because we really care for one another from our heart.
We all share the suffering of those affected by the floods. And I am going to do something about it to help them out of this awful situation. what are we going to do then? as "actions speak louder than words"... |
